For all karting enthusiasts looking for a special challenge or variety, we recommend testing the outdoor track on wet roads. Of course, we provide rainsuits free of charge. The experience of the last few years shows that driving in the rain has a very special appeal and brings a lot of driving fun. To help you get through the wet laps safely, we have a few tips for you:
Karting on a wet track – a completely new driving experience
Driving on a wet track definitely requires a different driving style than on a dry track. A good kart driver is often identified by their performance in wet conditions! On a wet track, the kart has less grip which means you have to adapt your driving style to the new conditions. Here are a few tips on how to improve your lap times despite the slippery conditions:
Changed ideal line
On a dry track, the ideal line runs over the most trafficked spots, where tyre wear forms a layer of rubber that provides maximum grip. On a wet track, the opposite is true. As soon as moisture hits this layer of rubber, a slippery film forms, which greatly reduces grip. To avoid losing time, you should avoid the ideal line. If you do have to cross it, try to minimise steering or braking manoeuvres to avoid drifting.
Taking turns on a wet track
Ground grip is particularly important in the corners to avoid skidding. Therefore, it is advisable to drive the corners from the centre to the outside as this is where there is the least rubber covering and therefore the most grip. While this means you have to take a longer route overall, you will quickly find that the slightly longer corners have a positive effect on your overall time as you avoid driving errors.
More grip on the front axle
Another tip is to put more grip on the front axle. You achieve this by steering harder into the curve to maximise steering effect. It also helps to shift your weight at the right moment to achieve stronger ground grip. When steering into a curve, you can move your torso slightly towards the outer edge of the curve to further support the weight.
What does the competition do?
Finally, it's always helpful to take a look at your fellow drivers. Watch how they drive, where they brake, how they take turns and where they might slip. Especially in the first few laps, this can help you find the best places for grip and adapt to conditions more quickly.
With these tips, you'll soon be able to experience pure driving fun in the rain and take on a new challenge on our wet outdoor track! Have fun and enjoy your ride!
